Pandemic Flu - Surge Capacity & Prioritisation in Health Services

17 April 2008

Community pharmacy will bear a considerable burden of expectation and demand from the large numbers of additional people who will require care and treatment within primary care in a pandemic, as well as maintaining services to existing patients such as those with long term conditions.

The document identifies ways in which capacity can be increased through increased use of self care, a national minor ailments service and full utilisation of repeat dispensing. The accessibility of pharmacies for promoting pandemic related information and health messages is also highlighted along with the impact on pharmacy workforce during a pandemic, changing roles and how community pharmacy may be affected, for example, by stock and fuel shortages.
