John Alan Vickers
It is with sadness that Umesh Patel, Chairman of Sunderland LPC attended the funeral of John Alan Vickers who died on 19 July 2018, aged 89 years, of Hove. Umesh paid the respects of Sunderland LPC to a former LPC secretary and lifelong ambassador for pharmacy, who will be missed by all who knew him.
He was born on 20 November 1928 in Bishop Auckland in County Durham but practically everyone, called him Alan; he registered with the Society in 1950 and was conferred with Fellowship in 1954.
Alan spent most of his life in Sunderland, where he lectured in the school of pharmacy at Sunderland Technical College (later Sunderland Polytechnic) until 1973. In 1983, he joined the NHS as a hospital pharmacist, working throughout Sunderland and the South Tyne region until his retirement in November 1988. During his career, he served as pharmaceutical officer for the Gateshead, South Tyne and Sunderland area health authorities, and was district pharmaceutical officer for Sunderland. He also acted as Secretary for Sunderland LPC.
Alan was also a member of the Hope Winch Society (alumni of the Sunderland School of Pharmacy) from its inception in April 1984, contributing greatly to the development and efficient functioning of the Society. At the 16th committee meeting, held on 22 June 1987, he was nominated for the office of treasurer after the sudden death of Alf Firth — the original treasurer of the Society. Alan took up the post officially a few months later and continued in this office until he stepped down in September 1996. He did, however, remain a committee member of the Hope Winch Society and continued to make a major contribution to it until October 2004. Alan remained a member of the Hope Winch Society until he died.
